This leadership position oversees a dynamic Community Law Clinic, managing legal processes, mentoring candidate attorneys, and driving access to justice for underserved communities. Minimum Requirements:
- LLB; LLM advantageous.
- Admitted Attorney with 10 or more years post-admission experience, including High Court litigation and civil law.
- Accredited by the SA LPC to act as a training supervisor.
- Proven management experience, including supervision of candidate attorneys.
- Passion for pro-bono work and engagement with underserved communities.
- Proficiency in multiple languages is advantageous.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Legal and Case Management:
Lead High Court and regional legal matters, providing hands-on guidance and strategic oversight. Offer expert legal advice, draft complex pleadings, and negotiate agreements. Oversee end-to-end case processes while maintaining professional standards. Represent clients in civil courts and manage high-stakes litigation. Supervise candidate attorneys handling consultations and casework, ensuring quality service for clients within the means test criteria. - Leadership and Operational Management:
Supervise candidate attorneys and ensure compliance with Legal Practice Council (LPC) requirements. Manage day-to-day operations, including recruitment, performance evaluations, and resolving IR matters. Report directly to the Dean while collaborating with Campus Heads across multiple campuses. Handle strategic planning, including facilities management and process improvement. Oversee the Pretoria clinic. - Community Engagement and Outreach:
Build partnerships with township leaders, NGOs, and courts to foster trust and expand access to justice initiatives. Lead pro-bono efforts, including advice desks and community workshops. Drive culturally sensitive service delivery to rebuild community trust in the justice system. - Mentorship and Student Development:
Oversee the training of LLB students and candidate attorneys, fostering professional and ethical growth. Actively support Work Integrated Learning (WIL) programs with direct supervision and evaluation. Provide mentorship, ensuring adherence to high standards in all legal work.
