PRIMARY POSITION PURPOSE
This position is responsible for the development of the functional business in the region.
The position is responsible for business planning, marketing, profitability, resource management, project execution, and delivery.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Develop business strategies aligned with the function's business plan, SMEC's business objectives, and overall strategic goals.
- Lead marketing efforts within the region, focusing on key clients with national and multi-functional impact.
- Proactively identify upcoming projects from key clients.
- Manage the commercial and business aspects of the Regional Functional Group, including financial management, client liaison, and contract administration.
- Develop and maintain relationships with key clients in the sector.
- Oversee submission of EOIs and proposals, managing the functional team's submissions.
- Manage functional overheads, proposal, and marketing budgets.
- Win and deliver location-based projects, ensuring timely and on-budget completion with quality standards.
- Monitor and improve resource processes, staff utilization, and capabilities.
- Ensure adequate resourcing and capability development within the team.
- Maintain internal contacts within SMEC South Africa for skill sharing.
- Identify and implement staff training and mentoring programs.
- Ensure proper documentation, reporting, and communication.
- Lead multidisciplinary project teams, mentor staff, and monitor performance.
- Assign Project Managers and oversee their performance.
- Collaborate with the General Manager on national utilization, knowledge management, and process control.
- Utilize technical expertise in bids, providing clear USPs.
- Foster collaboration across regions and functional groups.
- Support regional marketing and opportunity development.
- Manage the Regional Function Group, including task assignment, work review, and performance management.
- Report monthly on staff utilization, profitability, forecasts, project delivery, client relationships, WIP, and AR.
- Ensure compliance with SMEC's Management System, quality standards, and HSE procedures.
- Contribute to strategic planning for other function groups and regions.
- Manage budgets as per IOD instructions.
- Maintain liaison with regional and national business development teams.
- Drive innovation, continuous improvement, and differentiation in project delivery.
- Undertake annual CIGs with staff, with mid-term feedback sessions.
- Produce innovative concept and feasibility designs to differentiate SMEC nationally.
- Deliver successful project outcomes and excellent customer experiences.
- Coordinate and develop national innovation initiatives.
- Provide technical input to bids and develop USPs in technological fields.
- Engage with other offices and regions to foster collaboration.
- Assist the Regional Manager with marketing, opportunity development, and office matters.
- Line manage the Regional Function Group, including task assignment and performance review.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS, AND EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor of Engineering or higher degree from an accredited university.
- 10-15 years of practical experience in the discipline.
- PR Registration Civil, with 5+ years post-registration.
- Knowledge of QA, project, risk, and financial management principles.
- Ability to market and develop client relationships.
- Experience with web-based financial systems (BST).
- Knowledge of design, industry trends, and project delivery.
- Effective report writing and proposal development skills.
- Proven success in delivering projects within budgets and timelines.
- Recognized expertise nationally and internationally.
- Active participation in industry committees and networks.
