The Role
Mine rehabilitation and closure have grown and matured as a discipline and expanded globally. It has a multi- disciplinary dimension that involve landform configuration, surface rehabilitation, reinstatement of landscape functionality and wetlands, mine water balances and ongoing water treatment, recreation of land capability as well as post-closure land use, etc. The determination of closure costs is a key part of the suite of closure planning activities.
WSP is seeking an experienced individual to appoint as principal consultant, to play a strategic project management role in the Mine Closure Planning and Closure Costing Team for its South African operations. The position is based in Midrand and reports to the Mine Closure Team Lead, within the Earth and Environment Business Unit. The successful candidate will be required to lead closure planning and costing projects from conception to finalisation and will be required to manage project teams to undertake site visits, liaise with clients, conceptualise, and document closure measures, compile closure and rehabilitation planning reports, and compute and finalise closure costs. A key responsibility of the successful candidate would also be to in time develop and expand the closure and rehabilitation planning and closure costing service offerings, whilst aligning these with financial provisioning as well as other relevant legislative requirements and industry standards.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Actively managing mine rehabilitation and closure, next land use, and post-mining economy planning projects, while ensuring that execution is in line with up-to-date closure related legislation, and which requires innovative thinking and problem-solving abilities, specifically in respect of addressing latent environmental impacts
- Leading closure project teams consisting of junior closure team members as well as other internal and external specialists
- Consulting and collaborating with other specialists to develop appropriate technical solutions to specific aspects of closure planning, for example devising closure criteria for waste residue facilities and contaminated land, surface rehabilitation, or treatment of excess mine water make
- Conceptualising appropriate, feasible solutions to address complex closure related challenges and clearly articulating these using reports, spread sheets and drawings, and integrating into a final product
- Develop mine closure strategies, plans, policies and procedures
- Interpreting site observations to conceptualise closure scenarios and articulating these to be site specific
- Interpreting aerial imagery, engineering drawings and general arrangement drawings to accurately measure and calculate quantities and capturing these in the closure costing Bills of Quantity in a consistent and accurate manner
- Utilising a working knowledge of Auto CAD, QGIS Google Earth PRO and related software packages to compile reference maps that comply with the relevant regulatory and/or internal company standards
- Developing closure planning reports and costing spreadsheets, as well as reviewing deliverables produced by other closure team members and specialists
- Ensuring that deliverables meet the requisite quality, executed, and delivered within the agreed-to timeframes, and completed within the project budget
- Develop and implement mine closure plans in consultation with the client to guide successful implementation
- Liaison with clients and financial auditors to address queries and finalise reports
- Build and maintain relationship with internal and external stakeholders
The successful candidate must have strong spatial planning and numerical ability, as well as a well-developed project experience base in the mining and industrial sectors in South Africa and Africa. Core competencies must include the following:
- Leadership and independence with execution and completion of work
- Numeracy and the ability to deal with multiple-level costs worksheets
- Strong technical writing capability
- Diligence and judgment in decision making that has risk and / or financial consequences
- Skills to integrate technical input for the completion of multi-disciplinary reports and documents
- Ability to draw from internal relationships with other specialists to inform/develop solutions for particular applications/problems
- Physical rehabilitation techniques, mine closure strategies/plans and land use planning
- Ability to devise new/novel ideas towards improving the closure planning and costing service offering
- Understands and can manage project scope, tasks, and budgets to effectively execute the complete project life cycle
- Ability todevelop strong, loyal relationships both internally and externally
- Mentoring, skills competency and experience transfer and development of junior team members
- Understanding and practical implementation of applicable legislation and international mine closure guidelines, best practices and industry norms and standards

Skills, Qualifications, and Experience
- Minimum of six years’ relevant consulting or industry experience in the fields of mine rehabilitation and closure planning and related management functions
- Graduate degree in Environmental Management, Mining or Civil Engineering, Agricultural Management, Soil Science or Landscape Architecture, Honors’ Degree advantageous
- Professionally registered and qualified in relevant specialist field, or able to demonstrate that registration / qualification is in process.
- Understand the relevant local and international legislation.
- Have knowledge and application of the nature of risk and the risk management process.
- Demonstrate working knowledge and understanding of various mining activities and aspects (e.g. legislation, and compliance, processes and layouts and mining terminology)
- Advanced use of MS Excel is a prerequisite, as the successful candidate would be required to conduct complex closure costs as part of integrated closure planning.
- Proficient use of Auto CAD; MS Office suite of programs especially MS Projects; Google Earth Pro, and Adobe Acrobat Pro is required.
