Description

The Senior Electrical Engineer will serve as the primary contact for the Refinery on electrical technical and design matters.

Tasks include, but are not limited to:

  1. Being the Electrical Engineering Subject Matter Expert for Cape Town Refinery.
  2. Supporting compliance with Electrical Safe Work Practices Standards.
  3. Providing input into Astron technical standards and procedures.
  4. Performing and reviewing designs for:
  • Electrical distribution systems (LV & MV)
  • Power system protection, metering, and control systems
  • Motor control centres
  • Motor starters
  • Motors
  • Generators
  • VSD applications
  • Lighting
  • Cathodic protection
  • Earthing & lightning protection
  • UPS installations
  • Substations
  • Distribution boards
  • General electrical installations
  • Electrical and Instrumentation interfaces
  • Supporting Capital Projects as the Astron Engineering resource.
  • Participating in constructability reviews and project teams for electrical installations, including commissioning activities.
  • Managing safety, cost, schedule, and quality in multiple projects.
  • Managing deviations from electrical specifications and standards.
  • Resolving technical issues with suppliers and manufacturers.
  • Participating in manufacturing meetings and Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT).
  • Aligning work priorities with Refinery Business objectives.
  • Supporting the Reliability & Maintenance Department with technical problem solving and investigations.
  • Providing plant support and standby for technical electrical resources as required.
  • Offering technical support during turnarounds.
  • Contributing to reducing Total Cost of Ownership through technical expertise.
  • Supporting the management of change (MOC) process.
  • Managing interfaces with external organizations, including local authorities and Eskom.
  • Maintaining competency to mentor and coach effectively, including mentoring graduates and interns.
  • Assuming responsibility as the General Machines Regulation 2(7a) competent personnel appointee under the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) to ensure electrical installations are compliant and safe.

    • Additional Requirements:

    • University degree - BSc Eng (Elec) or BEng (Elec).
    • At least 8+ years of experience in Projects and Engineering within Refinery, Terminals, or Oil and Gas facilities, with strong site experience.
    • Knowledge of applicable codes and standards such as SANS 10142, IEC, EX Standards.
    • Understanding of Occupational Health and Safety Act and regulations related to Electrical Installations.
    • Experience with electrical installations in hazardous areas and relevant standards.
    • Strong technical knowledge of motors, transformers, protection, LV/MV switchgear, earthing, power cables, and power electronics.
