Description

Job duties & responsibilities:
If you have a GCC (mines and works) then you will hold the legal appointment in terms of Section 2.13.1 of the MHSA, taking responsibility for the safety and legality of all electrical work on site.
Ensure all mechanical equipment and installations comply with the Mine Health and Safety Act and other relevant regulations.
Keep abreast of changes in legislation and ensure the mining operation adheres to updated laws and standards.
Develop, implement, and monitor safety policies and procedures related to mechanical engineering.
Ensure these policies are effectively communicated and adhered to by all personnel.
Conduct or supervise regular inspections and testing of mechanical systems to identify potential issues and ensure compliance with safety standards.
Ensure all inspections and tests are documented and any defects are rectified promptly.
Perform risk assessments to identify potential hazards related to mechanical equipment and operations.
Implement risk mitigation strategies and ensure that appropriate safety measures are in place.
Lead investigations into mechanical failures, incidents, and near-misses to determine root causes.
Prepare detailed reports and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
Oversee the design review, installation, and commissioning of new mechanical systems and equipment.
Ensure that all new installations meet safety and operational standards.
Coordinate with other departments and stakeholders to ensure seamless project integration.
Ensure that all personnel are competent and aware of the latest safety practices and procedures.
Continuous Improvement:
Promote a culture of continuous improvement in mechanical engineering practices.
Encourage the adoption of new technologies and methodologies to enhance safety and efficiency.
Ensure documentation is up-to-date and easily accessible for audits and reviews.
Prepare and submit regular reports on the condition and performance of mechanical systems, construction activities, and safety compliance.
Report any significant issues or incidents to senior management promptly.
Communicate effectively with management, staff, and other departments to ensure smooth operations and address any issues.
Provide technical support and guidance to other team members.
Liaise with external contractors, suppliers, and regulatory bodies as needed.
Ensure that external parties comply with the mine’s safety and operational standards.
Develop and implement emergency response plans for mechanical failures and incidents.
Ensure all personnel are trained in emergency procedures and conduct regular drills.
Education and Experience:
National Diploma / Bachelors’ Degree in Mechanical Engineering

Government Certificate of Competencies (GCC) registration

At least 8 years of experience within mining, specifically mineral processing industry.
