BACKGROUND: The Project Officer will lead the coordination of consumer awareness, science-communication, outreach, social marketing and partnership-base in Cape Town and KZN.
The Project Officer will support the WWF-SASSI programme by planning, coordinating, and delivering effective science communication and outreach activities that drive sustainable seafood awareness and behaviour change.
The role will also contribute to WWF South Africa's broader objectives, ensuring alignment with organisational messaging, brand guidelines, and strategic priorities.
This position requires a strong communicator who is organised, creative, and comfortable working across multiple stakeholders, platforms, and projects.
Minimum Requirements A BSc Hons or MSc degree in marine biology, environmental sciences communications, or another relevant field.
An additional qualification or specialisation in science communication would be an advantage.
A 'digital native', highly competent across a broad spectrum of existing online technologies and an early adopter of new technologies Minimum 2 years of experience in communication roles, including content creation and strategy setting, either in a marketing, publishing, or science communication environment Articulate and confident oral communication and excellent writing skills in English Proven creative, planning and executing abilities Expertise in design, image editing and/or video content creation Proven experience in and affinity for social media Experience in environmental outreach or education Good understanding of marine conservation, science research method and an analytical mind Understanding of the role of social media, target audience mapping within the broader communication ecosystem An interest in and commitment to environmental and conservation issues and an understanding of the connection between social issues and the environment.

Ability to work independently, while collaborating effectively within a team Strong interpersonal and stakeholder engagement skills Creativity and problem-solving ability Ability to work remotely Time management and ability to manage multiple priorities Adaptability and willingness to learn Alignment with WWF values and mission You recognise yourself in the values of WWF: Courage, Integrity, Respect, Collaboration and Inclusion Duties and Responsibilities Co-ordinate and implement the WWF-SASSI communications & outreach strategy; including: Play a key role in the development, dissemination, updating and implementation of all WWF-SASSI communication channels and tools through the implementation of the WWF-SASSI strategy at a local, context-specific scale Identify key points of intervention (activations) to leverage, at scale, the impact of WWF-SASSI and assist in the implementation of these interventions utilising key behavioural science insights, social marketing strategies and effective science communication Ensure the implementation of WWF-SASSI activations and the uptake of SASSI tools with key audiences Provide creative input to WWF-SASSI training programme Manage WWF-SASSI volunteers and volunteer-related activations/activities Contribute creatively to activation of culinary and hospitality schools/organisations Track, monitor and evaluate of the WWF-SASSI programme's communication and social marketing activities including digital tools to measure impact and success Assist in the maintenance of key relationships with Networking Education partners nationally Increase the awareness and engagement with WWF's target audiences within WWF-SASSI and other relevant campaigns within Business Development & Marketing Unit, and Strategic Communications Unit Co-ordinate administration, and data sorting for WWF-SASSI outreach, communications, and activations Stay up to date with emerging knowledge and issues relating conservation, science-communication, behaviour change and other related initiatives in the field Assist with public awareness campaigns, events, activations, and outreach initiatives aimed at consumers, businesses, and partners.
More specifically, the Project Officer will be required to: Maintain, develop content and monitor the WWF-SASSI digital (including social media and Hubspot newsletters) platforms and tools (poster, website, pocket cards, apps etc.)Engage with key WWF-SASSI partners and target audiences through various publications and correspondence articles, blogs emails, etc.)Implement online and social media engagement strategies (including paid social media advertising)Support Networking Partners including the coordination of the annual Networking Partners meeting in Cape Town to share ideas and report on WWF-SASSI related activities and integrate WWF-SASSI activities into partner activities Assist the WWF–SASSI team in providing restaurants, retailers and suppliers with the necessary materials, tools and guidance needed to promote WWF-SASSI and Co-ordinate and implement the WWF-SASSI volunteer programme as per the national volunteer strategy Assist the manager in the hosting & presenting of WWF-SASSI workshops, events and outreach activities with key stakeholders such as educators, culinary schools, etc.
